The continuation of Greenbrier County's school levy is on the Nov. 8 election ballot, and early voting at the Courthouse and Rupert Community Center is open now through November 5. Please remember schools will be closed in observance of Election Day on Tuesday, November 8, and Veterans Day on Friday, November 11.
The levy, which has been in place since 1974, funds school security (including police officers in all schools); art and music programs; instructional supplies and allotments; capital improvements, facility maintenance and repairs; and personnel outside the school aid formula and maintain employee benefits. Forty-four WV counties have school levies in place. With the approval of a 60% levy, Greenbrier County will rank 36th among those counties in taxpayer contribution to education. Please visit greenbriercountyschools.org and select School Levy from the Site Menu options to learn more.

Fourth grade did the Re-Think Your Drink program last week through WVU Extension Service. There were activities throughout the week. The students looked at the amount of sugar in popular drinks. They were encouraged to drink more water. They made Re-Think Your Drink cards with sound.
Here are some pictures of some of the cards. A huge thank you to WVU Greenbrier County Extension Service for all you do for our school!

Attention Alderson Families, On Friday students must wear costumes to school, students cannot wear costumes that they need help getting on. Students will have a normal academic day until the Trunk or Treat event, if students are not here for the entire day they will not be eligible to participate in the event.

School bus transportation plays a critical role in the education of our nation's students and is the direct link between a neighborhood and the classroom. Each day, GCS transports approximately 2,925 students an estimated 4,570 miles -- a distance comparable to driving across the U.S. and more than halfway back. National School Bus Safety Week reminds us all to keep school bus safety at the forefront.

Since 1993, officials around the world proclaim the third week in October as #CharacterCountsWeek. GCS students learn the importance of developing and demonstrating good character every day through Trustworthiness, Respect, Responsibility, Fairness, Caring and Citizenship.

Alderson Pre-K students learned about fire safety from Alderson and Tri-County Volunteer Fire departments before taking a ride on the fire trucks. This was part of school-wide activities for Fire Safety Week!

Our after school students are enjoying using the VRs!

Fire Won't Wait. Plan Your Escape. It's #FirePreventionWeek and GCS joins the National Fire Protection Association in reminding families to practice home escape plans regularly.

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) serves nearly 30 million children every school day. President John F. Kennedy created National School Lunch Week (NSLW) in 1962 to promote the importance of a healthy school lunch in a child’s life and the impact it has inside and outside of the classroom. GCS celebrates #NSLW and the 2022 theme, Peace, Love & School Lunch.

Greenbrier County Schools reminds families that Monday, October 10, is a Professional Learning and Faculty Senate Day. Students do not report on October 10th. Thank you.

It was "Funtastical Music Friday" in music class today! Students worked in groups and rotated centers to work on learning the line and space notes of the treble staff!

Kindergarten is doing some “spooktacular painting” this week in class!

October is National Bullying Awareness Month. GCS students who experience or witness bullying can make an anonymous report to school officials using the STOPit web app at https://appweb.stopitsolutions.com/login or by downloading the STOPit app on any mobile device. Links to STOPit and incident reports are available on school and district websites and bookmarked on all student Chromebooks. Teachers and parents can assist students in submitting reports if they are too young to do so themselves. #StopBullying #BeKind

After reading the book Little Blue Little Yellow, Alderson PreK enjoyed learning how to mix two colors to create a new color today with their finger paintings! We love hands on learning!

Third grade studied the moon phases and completed a “sweet” activity to remember what to look for in the night sky! Learning is sweet!!
