Alderson Elementary students in Ms. Haylee’s and Mrs. Louise’s Pre-K, along with Mrs. Jones’ first grade and Mrs. Shires’ second grade enjoyed a visit from Linda Zimmer, a teaching artist representing Carnegie Hall’s Creative Classroom series. Students watched and participated in a live marionette and puppetry theatre performance that told the classic stories of Peter Rabbit, Jemima Puddleduck, and Tom Kitten, written by famous author/illustrator Beatrix Potter. Students then made their own Peter Rabbit puppets and used the puppet theatre for short retellings. Thank you to Carnegie Hall for this wonderful experience!

Alderson Elementary Pickleball Club was created this year and the students have taken a huge interest in learning the game and improving their skills! Last week the students traveled to Hollowell Park to play on actual courts! They have worked hard all year building foundational skills and have developed a love for the sport! #AldersonElementary

Launched by the Academy of American Poets in April 1996, National Poetry Month reminds the public that poets have an integral role to play in our culture and that poetry matters. Over the years, it has become the largest literary celebration in the world, with tens of millions of readers, students, K–12 teachers, librarians, booksellers, literary events curators, publishers, families, and—of course—poets, marking poetry's important place in our lives.
GCS congratulates GEHS Poetry Out Loud school contest winner Gracie Campbell! Way to recite and represent! #PoetryMonth

Mrs. McCallister’s class at Alderson Elementary School has been studying agriculture including dairy farming. They learned that butter is made from heavy cream (the fatty good stuff that rises to the top of the milk). Also they witnessed a liquid turning into a solid. The students conducted their own experiment by taking cream and shaking it in a bottle watching as slowly the fat molecules connected to each other forming chunks and finally becoming butter separating it from the liquid (buttermilk). The students drained the buttermilk from their bottles and then had butter to take home. It was a great afternoon of awe and wonder as for the first time the students understood the science behind making butter!

Alderson Elementary students and families had a fantastic time during "Healthy Hearts Day"! This day was full of basketball, jumping rope, "ReTHINKing our drinks", exploring the "Nex Playground" and visiting the various booths set up by our community guests! A big thank you to Ted E. Bear with AETNA Health, Greenbrier County Family Support Center, Osteopathic School Nex Playground, Elizabeth Reynolds with WVU Extension Office and Legal Aide of WV for spending the day with us and encouraging everyone to keep their hearts and bodies healthy and moving! #AldersonElementarySchool

Mrs. McCallister’s 3rd grade class at Alderson Elementary made bird feeders using the Build and Grow kits from Lowe’s. They had some great help from some local contractors who took their time to spend the morning with the students in a hands on activity. Thank you to Darrell McCallister, Bobby Fry, Dean Powell and Josh Collins for your time and willingness to work with the students. Also thank you to staff Tanner McCallister and Greg Rudd for your help as well. Working with those from our town helps to build a connection between the students/school and the community allowing great relationships to form. The bird houses looked wonderful and they were great gifts for the students to give to their parents!
